Chia Oil – The vegetable source of Omega-3

Chia oil is directly extracted from Chia seeds via smooth cold pressing. The oil that is obtained has a yellow-brownish color and a nutty smell. Chia oil doesn’t have a strong taste. Because of the high amount of antioxidants in chia seeds, Chia oil has a comparably long shelf life. Chia oil is a high value food which can be blended as admixture up to 10% to other oils. But also in other areas like cosmetics or in the production of varnish and paint, Chia oil is broadly used.

Special properties of Chia Oil

Yacon – Power of Minerals

The Yacon plant (Smallanthus sonchifolius) is native of the Andes and is cultivated all over South America. The plant forms big edible lumps with a high content of water and healthy nutrients. Yacon plants grown in Germany at a warm sunny climate reach a height of about 2 meters. In subtropical regions the plant can reach a height of up to 3 meters. The taste of Yacon roots is –because of the high sugar content- enjoyable sweet and can be compared to melon, pear or nashi-fruit.

The outstanding attribute of Yacon is the unit way of sugar storage. In Yacon, carbohydrates are not stored as starch but prevalently as inulin or fructooligosaccharides. These sugars cannot be digested in the human small intestine and migrate to the large intestine as fibers. Because of that, Yacon roots have probiotic properties and do not lead to an excessive rise of the blood sugar levels. Therefore Yacon is perfectly suited for people that suffer from diabetic disease. Consumption of Yacon within an inulin containing diet can help lose weight. Inulin that is present in Yacon roots has only few calories. One gram only has two calories.

The Lucuma tree (Pouteria lucuma) grows in the southern Andes and has already been valued and cultivated by the Incas. Because of that, Lucuma is also known as “gold of the Incas”. The fruit has a sweet taste and is predominantly cultivated in Peru. There, Lucuma is one of the prevalent cultivated plants.

The fruits of Lucuma trees have about the same size as mangoes. They have a green pericarp and yellow-orange pulp. In Europe, Lucuma is primarily available as powder with high nutrient content. Lucuma powder is made out of Lucuma fruits that were dried at low temperature. The fruits are gently powdered to obtain a vegan, raw fruit product.

Cocoa plants have already been cultivated in Central America, since 400 BC, by the Mayas and Aztecs. At this time cocoa beans were reserved for the gentry only and were consumed for special occasions as beverage with chili and honey. Today cocoa is primarily used for the production of chocolate in Europe.

The high calorie content of chocolate inhibits the health beneficial effect of ingredients in cocoa beans.
